What I find really annoying to me is the never-ending up-and-down movement of our site’s rankings. I feel I’m in a roller-coaster everyday and the search engines are playing with my livelihood. Why are there such huge fluctuations and what (if anything) can I do to try to “remove these big road bumps”? Your concerns are perfectly well founded, and, if I can tell you this: “You’re not alone”. Many people today have some difficulty in realizing that search engine ranking variations are absolutely normal. For instance, there might be periods of time in certain search engines when a site could be positioned at a precise spot and for a certain keyword for many months, if not years! However, usually, rankings can and will fluctuate greatly for many, if not the majority of sites on the Web today. Also, realize that many new sites are launched everyday. It is estimated that approximately 6,000,000 to 8,000,000 “new” Web pages are uploaded to the Internet everyday of the week! That’s over 210,000,000 new Web pages on an average month. Google says it has over 3 billion pages in its index today. I believe those numbers to be conservative in fact.
