If your old domain dosen't have them, then I would tend to agree with him, although I would still be reluctant to give up a domain that's a few years old! At any rate, if you decide to do it, make sure you place a 301 redirect from the old domain to the new one. this will ensure you don't lose traffic from people using your older domain, or users that may have already saved it in their list of favorite sites to visit.
