Will Google become a wireless carrier?

Recently there's been some talk that Google may want to bid in the upcoming FCC wireless spectrum auction. Google still won't talk about its plans, but there are some in the wireless industry that are starting to speculate Google wants a piece of the action!

According to some news reports, on October 17, co-founder Larry Page and CEO Eric Schmidt said "a lot about very little" during a conference call with Wall Street analysts...

Google executives didn't say whether or not the company plans to bid in the upcoming spectrum auction, though it was heavily involved in lobbying the FCC to adopt open access requirements for at least a portion of the spectrum.

Larry Page, the other Google co-founder, did say that the company has "many, many different options available" in terms of spectrum and connectivity solutions, adding that there are "opportunities available" for the company "in those kinds of spaces."

The executives also said that they are seeing strong results for the company's mobile application offerings and that it plans to continue talks and partnerships with wireless carriers.

Google has also reported another hiring surge during the quarter, adding 2,130 new employees at its GooglePlex.

So will Google become a wireless carrier?
That is the question. As good as Google is in search, can it cut it in an industry it knows little of? Or maybe the company is saying so little that there are a few things we don't know yet... This looks like a new puzzle that is unfolding and it's getting more and more exciting as we are finding out more about it, bit by bit.

I would think that with the army of software engineers that Google now has at its disposal, and with its marketing expertise, they have a level chance of pulling off something like this.

Time will tell, and you can be sure we will be watching and monitoring this segment closely for you.
