Google dit it, again! Well, just when you think you've seen it all, you haven't! Google released what many has termed a "bomb shell" on Monday, when it revealed it will provide a great Web analytics program (Urchin) for absolutely free to anyone that wants it. First, let's go back in time a bit. A few months ago, Google bought Web analytics firm Urchin for about $500 million. Urchin is considered by most people (including me) as one of the best Web analytics service available today. Monday's announcement by Google that it would give the service away for free left many, including me a bit skeptical at first. (Editor's note: Generally speaking, I'm usually skeptical when I see something that is "too good to be true"). Soon after Google's release of the news, it didn't take long for webmasters, SEO's and Internet marketing professionals to sign-up for the service! In fact, at one point, Google's servers were even a bit overloaded as thousands of users all rushed at the same time to take advantage of the offer. For having used it a while back, I can tell you Urchin is one of the best Web analytics hosted service I've seen on the market today. What Google is now offering for free used to cost no less than US $500 a month just last week! Now that Google owns 100% of Urchin, it can do what it wants with it, including giving the service away like it is doing now. Signing up for the service is very easy and you are immediately approved. Simply go to http://www.google.com/analytics/ and sign up. Installing Urchin on your site is simply a matter of copying the HTML code Google gives you and inserting it between the opening and closing HEAD tags at the top of all your Web pages, just underneath your meta tags. Being as busy as we are at the office these days, we didn't have time of signing up as of yet, but I can tell you we will beginning next week. Urchin is a quality and dependable product that I recommend if you really need to know all about the incoming traffic to your site, where they came from, which search engines referred them to you, what were the keywords they used, their overall behaviour on your site, how did they convert plus a whole slew of important data you need to know. I must say that at $500 a month, I think it WAS a bit expensive, at least for small businesses that couldn't afford that kind of money. But now that it's free, what do you have to lose? Google says its exactly the same high-quality product as before, only that its free! I'd like to get some comments from any of you after you've given it a try. Well, that's it for today folks. Thanks for being here and I will see you all next week. Have a great and safe weekend!
