The best way to explain what stemming is, if a searcher types in “build” in the Google search box, Google may also suggest the keyword “building” or "builder" which would broaden the previous search term. However, Google isn’t clear at this point which search terms it stems and which it does not. After doing some tests yesterday, I found a few examples of verb variants. As an example, a search on “eat food” did match some pages with “eating” and “food” while “driving a car” did match some terms with “drive a car”. To most people, you may be able to determine when all this happens by looking for the highlighted terms in the search results. Bear in mind that Google’s stemming feature, does not seem to occur on single word searches, but rather on two or three word searches or search phrases. Does this help to achieve better relevance?
