(Continued)     The RFS Newsletter, Nov. 5, 2005. Page 11

While we're on the topic of search engine-friendly web design, don't forget the important aspect of user navigation. There are still many site visitors that leave a site as fast as they came simply because they cannot navigate it, often ending up lost in it! Just yesterday, I was visiting the site of a fairly large US-based company (name withheld) and I was astonished that there was no classic 'Home' button anywhere on the site. I read at least 6 pages in it and I never found the "home" button.

Being able to rapidly go back to the homepage is about the fastest and simplest way to go back to the start if you ever get lost in any given site. Folks, avoid that big mistake at all times. How much space does a small button like that take on a page? If you don't want to place a button, you can still place a text link with those important "four-letter words" in it. While you're at it, it's always a good idea to create a sitemap, and to link it from your homepage. Doing that will help your users as well as the search engines.
