2) A diamond mine, just waiting for you to harvest

You have invested considerable amounts of money in search engine optimization for your website. You might even participate in a PPC (Pay-per-Click) campaign or other forms of advertising. Yet, you would like to know just who, when, how and where did they go while visiting your site. Maybe you are also asking yourself the eternal question: Did they buy from me? If not, why did they leave without buying anything?

After being in this business for more than 6 years, I still can’t understand why it is that so few site owners, business administrators and even many Webmasters don’t look at their server logs more often and, most importantly, more closely. Few seem to realize that there is a “diamond mine” of information residing in those log files. All it takes is to retrieve them and analyze them, at least once a week, at a minimum. If you can look at them everyday, it’s even better. Please click here to continue reading the article.

Why Web 2.0 matters...

Since September 10th, when I originally launched my new Internet marketing blog Signal vs Noise many of you wrote to thank me, and letting me know you appreciate it. There's also a few that asked "what's so important about Web 2.0 and what's in it for me?"

Make no mistake- social networking sites are here to stay and they won't go away... After the success of MySpace and YouTube you can only imagine what the short-term future holds in store for us. Failing to recognize important new trends such as these would be a big mistake.

The definition of Web 2.0
Wikipedia defines Web 2.0 as a perceived second generation of Internet-based communities and hosted services such as social-networking sites and wikis which aim to facilitate collaboration and sharing between users. The term became popular following the first O'Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004.

Although the term suggests a new version of the World Wide Web, it doesn't actually refer to an update or to any technical specification, but to specific changes in the way software developers and end-users use the Internet.

"Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the Web as a platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform," says Tim O'Reilly. Some technology experts, notably Tim Berners-Lee and Vinton Cerf, have questioned whether one can use the term in a meaningful way, since many of the technology components of "Web 2.0" have existed since the early days of the Internet.

Personally, the first time I read the term Web 2.0 I had the same vision, ie. I didn't interpret this as being version 2.0 of the Web but rather a new way of publishing on the Web and a new method to interact with other communities using the Internet as the main media, a channel that's open 24/7 and that ignores time zones.

Again, you can ignore it, you can still think about it, or, you can go ahead and join it.

Personally, I chose the last option. Signal vs Noise is good proof to that. So how can the average site owner or webmaster make the best of Web 2.0 you may ask?

For the past three to four years I've written a lot about how blogs can help you in business. Besides blogs, you can create a user forum linked to your site. Another popular technology that has been gaining a lot of traction lately are RSS feeds.

At Rank for $ales we are getting more and more enquiries these days of business people asking us how they can create their own version of MySpace, in the hope that they will emulate that popular social networking site.

In the last six months, I've noticed a big push towards Web 2.0 and social sites, and there will be more I'm sure. It's still not to late to join the bandwagon. The time is now. Get in on it and reap all the rewards soon...

Food for thought.

Well, that's it for this week. Have a pleasant and relaxing weekend, I will see you all next Saturday!
