(Almost 90 percent of SMEs have fewer than four employees, and almost three-fourths have no employees.) But “self-service” and small business have so far been like oil and water.

A day is coming when that won’t be true. But the offerings need to be much simpler and more dynamic. It will be interesting to see what emerges from this pilot program in terms of any innovations in self-provisioning.

In news on Thursday, and according to a source, Google and Comcast are reportedly in talks with Time Warner to acquire a monority position in its AOL unit. News of the negociations, first reported in The Wall Street Journal Thursday, comes as Time Warner is also discussing a joint venture between AOL and Microsoft's MSN unit.
