(Continued) The RFS Newsletter, Oct. 15, 2005. Page 18
This news story really got my attention! This week, when Google and Comcast said they want to acquire a part of AOL, it really grabbed my attention. If you've been reading this newsletter for some time, then you know I read such news with great interest. After all, Google wants to attract the largest number of eyeballs to its search properties and Web portals. What better way to increase that number with about 22 million new Internet users, which is about the current number of people using AOL. Additionally, and as the latest few months have proven us, Google wants to make it's properties the new 'operating platform' of the Internet, which is the main reason why Microsoft fears Google so much! If people can only use free hosted applications at Google and free-standing resources they need from Google, then maybe they won't have to rely on their computers (read: Windows) as much... I can certainly understand why Microsoft's Steve Ballmer dislikes Google so much... At Google, the moto seems to be: "Just when you think you've seen it all, you ain't!". After hiring such prestigious and high-profile names as Internet "Evangelist" Vinton Cerf and Princeton University President Shirley Tilghman, Google's booming success at hiring top talent is a given. The list of PHD's, engineers, scientists and countless other professions working at Google now reads like a who's who of the IT profession. I don't know how Google manages to attract such high-caliber talent, but they are! As I've said many times before, expect Google to continue developing it's many businesses at it's neck-breaking speed. The next 12 months are critical... Once the Google-Comcast deal goes through, there will be more similar, maybe even bigger. Remember Google and the Dark Fibre story? Just when you thought you've seen everything, you ain't! Well, that's it for today folks. Thanks for being here and I will see you all next week. Have a great and safe weekend!
