For all intents and purposes, Google and most of the other major search engines will give credence and thus they will generally index your website faster in their database if they see other websites that point to your's. It's just as simple as that.

Another alternative would be to use a good paid inclusion search engine such as Global Business Listing, or perhaps other similar engines or directories to achieve the same goals. You should also read on how to get into the DMOZ or Open Directory Project. Since Page Rank™ (PR) is still a determining and important factor in how Google and many other search engines evaluate and rank websites, you need to increase the PR value to boost the overall visibility of your site in the search engines.

As important as Page Rank™ is, there are also other critical elements you will need to consider, such as on-page optimization, keyword density, keyword relevancy, targeting the right visitors, having a site that converts well and more. Hope that helps and good luck with your traffic.
