A man I admire and respect a lot
If you read today's news earlier, then by now you know that Google has hired "Internet Evangelist" Vinton Cerf, a man who I've always admired and that I respect a lot. Vinton's resume reads like a who's who of the Internet. In fact, along with Tim Berners Lee, Vinton Cerf is still called by many as the "father of the Internet", since he was so instrumental in the initial development phases of the Internet more than 30 years ago! There are still many people that think the Internet is only 8 to 10 years old. That is simply not true. In 1974, "Vint" (as many call him now) helped lay the foundation to the TCP/IP protocol, of which the whole Internet network runs on today! Without TCP/IP, the Web as we know it today simply wouldn't work. If you'd like more information on Vinton's background and his impressive credentials, Wikipedia lists the following info on him: Vinton G. Cerf received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Stanford in 1965. After graduation, he went to work for IBM, but soon decided that he wanted to learn more about computers. In 1967, he returned to University, enrolling in UCLA’s computer science program, where he was a student under Leonard Kleinrock. He then received a Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in 1970 and 1972. While at UCLA, he worked on the ARPANET, the earliest packet switched computer network. During this period (as well as later), he was the author of several RFCs. He continued working on computer networks when he became a professor at Stanford University in 1972. Shortly thereafter, in 1973, Bob Kahn (whom Cerf already knew, since Kahn had been in charge of the ARPANET project as its prime contractor, Bolt, Beranek and Newman) and Vint started thinking about how to connect together several different packet switching networks, into what we now call the Internet network. Their 1974 paper, "A Protocol for Packet Network Intercommunication" is now recognized as the fundamental document in this (then-new) field. Soon afterwards, in 1976, Vinton was asked to move to the United States Department of Defense’s Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), to run a research and development program in this area. During his tenure, from 1976 to 1982, he played a key role in leading the development of the TCP/IP protocol and the Internet. After that, as vice president of MCI Digital Information Services from 1982 to 1986, he led the engineering of MCI Mail, the first commercial email service to be connected to the Internet. The fact that the bright prople over at Google hired Vinton Cerf clearly demonstrates just how serious Google is in wanting to further develop the Internet to a level where everybody simply cannot work or live without it anymore! Vinton, congratulations to you and Google: you've made a great decision by hiring him! Well, that's it for today folks. Thanks for being here and I will see you all next week.
