A Google spokesman declined further comment. As the Internet's most profitable company, Google could absorb a fairly large charge without too much pain. In the first half of 2008, Google earned $2.55 billion.

Aug. 15 Yahoo announced that it has appointed Frank Biondi and John Chapple to its current board of directors. This apparently puts an end on the never-ending Carl Icahn 'circus' episode, which featured the corporate raider's anemic attempts to take control of Yahoo, or in forcing an unwanted sale of the Number Two search property.
