For the past five to six years, Google has usually performed an index update during that period for two good reasons: 1) It's 'back to school' time and teachers and students alike enjoy fresh search results when they return to the classes. 2) People usually have ended their summer holidays and like to go back to work with fresh results also.

Other than that, Google hasn't performed any important index update since the middle of May and now I would say it's time to update. Hope that helps.
