On the other hand, if you own a marketing agency and if your spouse owns a restaurant, well then yes, you certainly need two domain names, and two completely different websites. Always remember that search engines are always looking for relevancy. A restaurant has nothing in common with a marketing or communications agency!

Using another example, if you own two building materials stores and if they are situated in two different cities, since they are both selling the same products, in such a case, you don't need more than one domain name, nor do you need more than one website, since they both operate in the same field.

Sometimes, people ask me if search engines can penalize sites that have more than one domain name and the answer is yes. If you have many domain names and many websites which are all in the same industry or market segment and if they are all linked to each other, many search engines will view this as spam and may penalize some of those sites. In rare cases, they can ban all of them.
