However, experience tells me that time usually has a habit of catching up with what I call "SERPs Discrepancies among Industries and Sites". Remember Update Florida back in 2003? In more recent times, I'm sure you must remember the Big Daddy Update? At any rate, Google, and to a lesser extent Yahoo and MSN all 'oscillate' and make websites go up and down ALL the time and sometimes at very unexpected moments of the day or night!

For every 5 sites that go up in the results pages, there are probably 200 that go down at the very same time! This is all normal. However, what I DO KNOW is that on the Internet today, quality content means the whole difference. You didn't say if the newer site had lots of quality and updated content. Nor did you mention anything to that effect about the older site so it's a bit hard to speculate on the real reasons.
