By changing all the filenames, you are automatically replacing all the links and URLs to all your documents and pages inside your site. Apart from being a lot of work, it is totally futile and there's a number of reasons why... First, did you know that if you change just a filename extension, say from a .htm to a .html or a .php you will lose all PR for that file?

This is true. Make the test if you wish. There are many SEOs and webmasters that do this constantly without knowing any better. Such a page won't recover from it's lost PR until Google makes a full PR update again, which may be many months away, depending where you are in the 'PR Cycle' so-to-speak.

Here's another reason why it's a bad idea to change filenames and URLs in a site. Say you have an older link to your site that goes like this: http://www.yoursite.com/products.html and that you decide to change it to this: http://www.yoursite.com/bluewidgets.html. For all the search engines (and there are more than 3) that have the first URL in their databases, if you change that, visitors AND search engines will now arrive to a dreaded "404 Page Not Found" error message, one of the uggliest pages in any webmaster's mind...
