Question -- Serge, thanks for a nice newsletter. I've been reading you for a year now and I'm learning from you everytime! Just a quick question: What ever happened to AltaVista? Do people still use it? Should I optimize my site for it? What do you think?

Answer -- Happy you like the newsletter. It's funny you should say that: I've always liked AV and I've been using it a lot up to about five years ago. Since then I mostly use Google now, but I still sometimes feel nostalgic of the outcome of what used to be a great search engine that always worked for me.

About three years ago, Yahoo bought all the rights to AltaVista and to my knowledge, they haven't done much with it since. Maybe all they wanted was to eliminate a competitor? $450 million sure sounds like a lot of money for me to just eliminate a competitor. Then again, considering all the billions at stake in the search engine advertising wars, maybe it isn't.
