Answer -- It isn't supposed to happen but I've seen it once or twice. If it keeps doing it, why don't you write a friendly email to Google and ask them how you can prevent that from happening. While waiting for an answer, and if you're concerned it could crash your server again, then I would recommend you exclude GoogleBot with the use of the Robots.txt protocol, for a while at least, not forever.

By the way, do you have a Linux or a Windows server? On both occasions where I saw that happening it were on two seperate Windows servers. Don't know if it was just a coincidence, but I found it strange. Let me know.
