Google Update Bourbon

For those of you that regularly read my search engine blog, well you already had an advanced notice- in fact as early as Tuesday, May 17. Some of you may have already suspected this, but late Wednesday, Google initiated what appears to be a major update of its index of eight billion+ pages. From the many posts I have been reading, and judging from the increase in the rankings of many of our clients' sites (old and new), I can tell you that this one is for real.

If any of you remember the now 'infamous' Update Florida, and all the endless shuffle it caused to millions of sites, I don't want to cry wolf here, but Update Bourbon (this is what its called!) seems to affect just about everything in its passage.

Although this update will probably run right over to Monday or Tuesday before it finishes all its 'dancing', so far, and by the initial observations I've made until this morning, it appears to be a good one, and not the BAD hurricane we had on November 15 of 2003 (Update Florida).

Case in point: First Hand Medical

First Hand Medical is a new site we just recently completed, and has barely been online for a month now. Rank for $ales has been mandated to completely design and optimize the My Carpal Tunnel eCommerce website about a month ago. First Hand Medical manufactures and distributes the Carpal Solution, for the many people suffering from the Carpal Syndrome, and visitors can safely purchase it with a credit card on the MyCarpalTunnel website.

Since Google hasn't updated its PR database as of yet, the site still shows up as PR 0. However, the site has been gaining a LOT of traffic, especially since the middle of this week, and even more towards Thursday and Friday. Additionally, I'm seeing a lot of similar action in about 80% of our clients's sites in the past two to three days. Some of those sites are five to six years old, others, such as B2B News are less than six months old and are already gaining a lot of traffic.

Additionally, and this is one more observation I've made, since Google started this update as early as Tuesday, I've noticed that all the sites we are carefully following have reverted back to their old PR values. Just on Monday, B2B News enjoyed a strong PR 6 rating throughout the site. This morning, it reverted back to its PR 0 rating, since the site had only one single PR update done and that was in April. At any rate, when you type the keywords 'B2B News' in Google, the site comes up as number 5 on the first results page, which is a great spot to be!

All of this tells me that, on top of making a major update to its search index, Google is probably doing a PR update too at the same time. I say probably, since there is never any sure way of telling with Google.

When will this all end? I guess late Monday or Tuesday, maybe a bit later. Remember that when Google updated Florida, it had about only two billion pages in its index. Now with over eight billion, expect this update to maybe run as long as a full week! Good luck to all of you, and, as always, I would certainly appreciate your feedback or your observations on Update Bourbon.

Well, that's it for today folks. Thanks for being here and I will see you all next week. Have a great and safe weekend!
