On the other hand, about 98% of Linux servers support it with no problem at all. In fact, mod_rewrite was developed specifically for Apache servers. Apache was developed for the Linux platform so it is 100% native (sorry for sounding like a programmer but that's what it is). Ask your current hosting provider if their Windows servers will work well with mod_rewrite before you go ahead and make important changes in that aspect of your site.

Overall, mod_rewrite is mostly for eCommerce websites and database-driven sites that have long and meaningless URLs.
