In a nutshell, that is basically how mod_rewrite works and what it does to a site, search engine-wise. It takes more work on the part of the site developer and the webmaster that will maintain that site, but the benefits to the site owner could mean the difference between a site that does great in the search engines and pulls in a lot of relevant traffic, or, a site that can't be found anywhere and is a big looser as far as generic (organic) traffic is concerned.

However, one closing note on mod_rewrite... There are many Windows and IIS Web servers that currently don't support mod_rewrite or if they do, they are often unstable and can even sometimes crash your Web site!
