Google, not as strong of a search player in the Japanese market, is a strong PPC player, with accomplished AdWords partners in Goo, Big Globe, Excite Japan and the controversial Livedoor company. Currently there are no sponsored ads being shown on Become Japan.

And to end the week on Thursday (I told you it was a very quiet week in the news) the city of San Francisco awarded Google and EarthLink a contract to provide the California city with a wireless Internet network. Under Google and EarthLink's joint proposal, free and paid wireless Internet access services would be available throughout the city. Chris Vein, executive director of the Department of Telecommunications and Information Services for the city of San Francisco, said today he expected that negotiations with EarthLink and Google would go smoothly. Work on building the network could begin in 2006 and would be completed within a few months. In response to a report that came out today from the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Electronic Privacy Information Center that concluded the Google-EarthLink bid was among the worst on protecting user privacy, Vein said he had not read it.
