Google & EarthLink awarded San Francisco Wi-Fi project When news hit late this week that Google and EarthLink would be awarded the Wi-Fi wireless access contract for the city of San Francisco I was happy for them. But I wasn't that much surprised. Including me, a lot of industry observers had anticipated such a move. Google now has the financial and the human resources to pull such a feat, especially when it will receive help from EarthLink, an ISP with many years of experience in the US market. By all counts, this is an important new development. Google has said from the beginning that the city of San Francisco will probably be a pilot project. If it is successful it will want to replicate the same in other major US cities. This is a first, both for Google and a large modern city such as San Francisco. The outcome of this will be closely scrutinized by many industry observers, myself included. The project is expected to take from 3 to 5 months to complete. I would assume that one of the toughest obstacles to the project is how will they be able to 'push' wireless signals through concrete buildings with steel structures? Usually such buildings represent challenges to radio waves, since the steel structure acts as a giant shield preventing radio waves from entering. I'm not a wireless expert-- far from it! I'm only going with my logic, and my early years of experience working with radio signals when I was a young man! I remember when we tried to install various radio equipment in a concrete building we had many problems. Modern buildings with concrete floors all have one thing in common: they all have a steel structure and all that steel plays havoc with radio signals. Of course I realize that technology has improved by leaps and bounds since the mid-seventies and Google and EarthLink will most likely find a common solution to the problem. Another important hurdle they will need to address is Internet security. Ask anyone that is connected to a wireless network and they will tell you their number one concern is security. Armed with just a laptop, computer hackers have been SEEN driving up and down whole downtown city blocks, either in a car, or preferably in a van trying to pick-up some sensitive corporate data... Although this is illegal, it's really frightening when you think about it! Nevertheless the whole project is an impressive one at that. I will be watching these developments rather closely since this will be a pilot project that will dictate how the others will materialize over the next few years. Well, thats it for this week. Have a pleasant and relaxing weekend. I will see you all next Saturday!
