While competing for basically the same keywords, the site above or below your's in the SERPs could be very indicative as to the exact status of how well it may be optimized. What I mean is that if a site is 3 years old and is at the number one position (first page) and the site just below it is only a year old, you can be reasonably assured that that site enjoys strong SEO rankings and will probably be there for years to come.
