Here's the reasoning behind the Sandbox Effect: since almost two years now, if you launch a new website with a new domain name, Google (but not the other search engines) will "place" that site in what is called a Sandbox (for lack of a better name for it). No amount of links to it, no amount of pages and whatever or how much optimization you will do for that site, there is no way it will get any visibility until Google removes it from its sandbox.

Once the site gets out of it, it will finally have some PageRank (PR) and will get some visibility. How much nobody can tell for sure until it gets there. So the next question "How long will a new site stay in the Sandbox"? That's the real tricky part. Nobody seems to know for sure. In the last two years we have built brand new websites with shiny new domains that got out of the sandbox in four months, sometimes eight months and sometimes it took a whole year. So the 'jury is still out' on that one I would say. What you SHOULD be doing however is register your new domain as soon as you can and place a "We will open shortly" page with at least one link to it from a site that has some PR on it. That way, at least the "clock will start ticking" for you faster than if you wait another 6 months or more.
