Similar sites to your's would appeal to other visitors that would click on those links or banners and bring you new traffic. A few things I would do right now is this:

1) Try to improve your site's conversion rate
2) Add new content, articles, news, etc.
3) Review your keyword research using WordTracker
4) Review your keyword density and keyword frequency
5) Write a strong and compelling homepage

That's about it. Oh, also this: How's your site's PageRank? Maybe it could be increased? If you have a low PR, say 2 or 3 that dosen't help. Try boosting that to a PR 5 or 6 if you can. Although it's true that PR isn't everything it does make a difference. The practice of link leasing is still very much alive and well today.
