For example, if you own a bed and breakfast or a motel near an airport, you might want to consider exchanging links with a few rental car companies in your area. They are not direct competitors to you and many people that fly often want to rent a car, and, they certainly need a place to stay.

If they see your link on the rental car company’s site, they might click on your link, since you are in the same area. In such an example, your site and their site can both be considered in the travel industry, as far as links are considered.

To your second question: “Is it normal that you seem to be getting more and more invitations”? Yes it is. In light of the important changes done at Google in the last 15 months, the practice of exchanging links is even more important now than ever before. However, personally, I'm a lot colder now on RLEP's than I was about a year or two ago, and this for a number of reasons.
