Big Daddy Update: not mid-February, but mid-March! As you might expect, Google's Big Daddy Update is now the "talk of the town" and is about the only topic on SEO's, webmasters and site owners lips these days. Big Daddy (BD) is turning out to be the longest, the largest and by far the slowest update ever to happen in Google's short seven-and-a-half year history. If you need to know, BD actually started around January 18 (give or take a few days). As I'm writing this, it is barely about 50 percent complete. Early yesterday, I was listening to WebmasterWorld Radio (its an iPod Broadcast) and near the end of the SEO Radio Show I overheard none other than Google's Matt Cutts telling us that BD won't fully be propagated in all of Google's data centers until around mid-March! Of course, Matt didn't give us a specific date (Google never does) but he did say around mid-March! So, essentially its now taking Google about 2 months to make a full update of all its index and in all of its data centers. Two months folks! Is their index large enough for you? I would think so. What does that mean for the average site owner or webmaster? Nothing really, except that if you create and upload new pages some people (maybe even you) may not be able to see them in Google at certain times. There's absolutely nothing you can do on any of this. It's Google's search engine and they run the show. Will this create a lot of instability? Oh yes... You just have to read this forum thread on the RFS Forum to get a grip on all that instability. I call that "short term pain for long term gain". In the end, if your site is well structured, has plenty of great and unique content and is well optimized according to Google's Terms of Use, your site will do a lot better in the SERP's. How can I be so sure? Over the past two weeks, I've been starting to observe that many of our client's sites we optimized in the last six months have now moved up in their rankings. In fact, some of them are even less than a year old and are now enjoying very good and targeted traffic. I also suspect that Google may have even "slightly reduced the time factor in its sandbox" with this Big Daddy update. We won't know for sure until mid-March when the whole update is all completed and over with, but I can tell you that here at Rank for $ales there are some SEO's that are really anxious to find out. So stay posted and come back here often and go to our forum thread on Google's BD update to learn the latest hour-by-hour developments on this important update. Well, thats it for this week. Have a pleasant and relaxing weekend. I will see you all next Saturday!
