Will Yahoo offer contextual advertising to site owners?

This week, Yahoo started offering contextual search, designed to assist people in finding more relevant content on the Internet. The Y!Q service offers "contextual" search that analyzes the page being read and gives a list of related search results. So far, the uncontested leader in contextual search has been Google-- they practically 'wrote the book' on contextual search. However, now that Yahoo is offering the same feature, it opens up a whole new range of opportunities for the company run by Terry Semel, a man I happen to admire and respect.

Google's AdSense program and its success and popularity is based on one important thing: contextual search. AdSense would'nt be what it is without relevant and targeted ads being served on specific content. This is basically what attracts a person to click on the ads in the first place.

Now that Yahoo offers the same contextual search features that Google has, does this mean Yahoo might soon be able to offer contextual advertising very similar to Google's AdSense program? It would in fact be nice if they did. This could even possibly drive the price down on some of the most expensive keywords advertisers are already paying for, either through Google's AdWords or Overture's PPC program.

As in any other industry, competition is always healthy and keeps overall prices in line with reality. In this case, reality is what the market will bear for relevant keywords, in a targeted market. But if there's a new player offering an additional option to advertisers, this could drive some prices down, as the law of supply and demand kicks in.

It will be interesting to follow this development closely, as the competition is greatly heating up between the three biggest search engines: Google, Yahoo and now the new MSN.

Well, that's it for today. Thanks for being here and I will see you all next week. Have a great weekend everybody!
