One thing I did notice in the last 12 months is that Google seems to cringe a bit when it "sees" a new site, less than 3 months old that already has 200 backlinks or more pointing to it. Google seems to think this could be spam, since such a large number of links in such little time is rather unlikely.

What does all this mean for the average site owner or webmaster? Not much really, except that it takes about 6 to 9 more months to have a site that ranks well, compared to the "old, pre-Florida" average of about 2 to 3 months. Is this fair? Yes, since all new sites are all in the same boat, independently of the number of links or even if they participate in any PPC campaign for that matter!

Can you still rank as high as before? Certainly! It just takes a few more months, like anywhere from 4 to 7 or 8 more months for some of the new sites I have been observing. Then again, it also depends greatly on the industry you're in, or if you are competing against much older and established sites, especially if the competition for your same keywords or keyword phrases is important.
