Federal judge to order Google in turning over data Many observers have long said that, sooner or later Google faces being scrutinized heavily for what many say could be breaches of privacy and such. Now, if you have a GMail (email) address, Google can (if they wish) have access to some or all of your emails. This is only one example among many. Did you know that Google can find out a lot on your surfing behaviour if you have the Google toolbar installed on your computer? The list goes on and on like this. Earlier this week, the Whitehouse asked a federal judge to order Google in turning over large quantities of data from its huge database. The intended move is part of a government effort to revive an Internet child protection law struck down in 2004 by the U.S. Supreme Court. The law was meant to punish online pornography sites that make their content accessible to minors. The government contends it needs Google's data to determine how often pornography shows up in online searches. In court papers filed in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Justice Department lawyers revealed that Google has refused to comply with a subpoena issued last year for the records, which include a request for 1 million random Web addresses and records of all Google searches from any one-week period. The Mountain View-based search and advertising giant opposes releasing the information on a variety of grounds, saying it would violate the privacy rights of its users and reveal company trade secrets, according to court documents. So the question is, should Google have access to so much private information on millions of people scattered all over the would and not just in the US? Personally, I tend to agree with some that say Google has become a bit too "powerful" as it relates to privacy issues. How long can Google delay before they are being forced by a higher court to hand over the documents? We should soon find out. In the mean time, it will be interesting in carefully following this case closely. Well, thats it for this week. Have a pleasant and relaxing weekend. I will see you all next week.
