This piece of news really grabbed my attention!

Leave it to Google to always surprise people and innovate in every way possible. Just when you think you've seen it all, there's more!

As you've read earlier in our news section, Google is to offer free video downloads, video rentals and premium-partnered video content via its soon-to-be-launched Video Store. Major announcements of partnered footage to be available from the Google Video Store include media empires such as CBS and the NBA.

CBS plans to offer some popular programs such as CSI available for rental via Google Video Store, offering the shows via Internet much faster than it takes to get those shows out in DVD collectors editions - one day after airing.

Yahoo News also runs down other planned distribution : “Another 300 ‘classic’ CBS shows such as ‘I Love Lucy’, ‘The Brady Bunch’ and ‘Star Trek’ will be offered for download and outright ownership for the same $1.99 fee.

Other partners include the historical video archive of Britain’s ITN and selected Sony BMG videos.

Time Warner is expected to eventually participate in the video store as part of a recently expanded search and advertising deal, Google CEO Eric Schmidt added.”

Google is taking the educated 'geeky' approach to the Google Video Store launch.

As you might expect, if Google is getting into the video rental and video retailing business, this has the potential of literally eliminating a large number of older and well-established players in the industry, such as NetFlix and a few more. As recent as last June, Amazon.com announced publicly that it will enter the online video rental business.

The fact that Google completely revolutionizes new ways and new means of doing business is well-known by now. What's really surprising in this case is that it is entering a new field that is totally outside of its main expertise: search.

Does it have good chances of success in this new venture? I would think so, given the 15 to 20 (or so) billion dollars they have in the bank by now. Also, remember that Google is still hiring a lot of PHD's, scientists, engineers and specialized technical personnel to run all its operations.

Sit back, and just wait for more of these stunning and bold new developments from a company that sees no end to just how much the Internet can be developed and refined.
